These ladies are floating – dancing. The golden hands emphasize movement, so although they are motionless they project motion.
The process of sculpting is a series of endings. Once a piece has been formed and fired it is unchangeable, its shape is fixed. The piece is then glazed and again fired, its outer shell is formed, and the piece is frozen in time, another ending.
This is the difficulty working on individual sculptures, they become complete and their life is fixed. Elke prefers to create series sculptures, as one piece develops and is completed the next piece is evolving or developing, like chapters from a book, telling a story. The work takes on a life of its own, creating its own story.
